About the event

As Harriet Tubman said, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer," and we want to dream with you.

We believe that dreaming is a space of discovery and remembering, a space of creation and connection, and quite often a space of joy. We have witnessed over and again how sharing our dreams with one another brings them closer to reality and generates momentum. And we know the power collective dreams hold to remake our world in more just and equitable ways.

In Spring 2023, we dreamt with Black seniors, Black creatives, and Black neighbors. As we listened to their dreams, we heard a call for the African American Art & Culture Complex to act as a home and an anchor, a hub and a convening space, and a holder of the past and an engine for the future. Now, we are convening a series of targeted Dreaming & Listening sessions to build upon these dreams and begin the process of creating a Black Dreams Archive that will live at the African American Art & Culture Complex.

This particular Dreaming & Listening Session is for anyone who has participated in any of the following programs at the AAACC:

  • Dream Keeper Initiative,
  • Radical Self Care Quick Grants,
  • Enterprising Creatives,
  • OEWD Cultural Preservation Group,
  • CDPA

Goal:

To hold space and time for Black Dreams to be and to be shared with and among Black people to imagine a future for Fillmore with the AAACC acting as a home and an anchor, a hub and a convening space, and a holder of the past and an engine for the future.

Outcomes:

By the end of this Dreaming Session, participants will:

  • Experience dreaming as a path / way towards being with one’s self / spirit / mind,
  • Share their self / spirit / mind with others present,
  • Help strengthen the roots of the Fillmore and African American Art & Culture Complex, and
  • Contribute to the cultivation of a collective Black Dreams Archive.
